The Swedish press has a daily reach of 88 percent of the population

There are 168 Swedish newspapers with a combined circulation of approximately 4 million and a daily reach of 88 per cent of the population. 117 of the newspapers can be read online, and with the third highest Internet penetration rate in the world, Swedes are always online.

The Swedish Press is self-regulated through the Press Ombudsman and the Swedish Press Council. In Sweden, freedom of the press dates back to 1766 and has been enshrined in the Swedish Constitution since 1809.

The Swedish Newspaper Publishers' Association (TU)

"TU" is the abbreviation for Tidningsutgivarna, a trade and employers' association for Sweden's daily newspapers and other media companies. Its 240-strong membership includes virtually all Swedish morning and evening newspapers, many free papers, news agencies, printers, newspaper distribution companies, advertising sales companies, some television and radio stations and book publishers. The association is a lobby group and a knowledge repository for the industry. The purpose of the work carried out is to strengthen members' businesses. About 35 staff work at the Stockholm head office, covering areas such as journalism, industry data, information, marketing, labour market issues, law, negotiations, training and industry conferences, international collaborations, technical development and administration.
