Göteborg by sea and land

The day begins with a guided bus tour of Göteborg, past many of the sites that give the city its distinctive character. Then accompanying persons will board boats in the centre of the city to see the old moat and canals that date from the 17th century and pass under the many low bridges, including the extremely low Osthyveln, “The Cheese Slicer”, bridge which comes out into the harbour. After a light lunch there will be a visit to Trädgårdsföreningen, a park opened in 1842 which has a world-class rosarium, a palm house and a butterfly house. Then there will be a trip to Kronhusbodarna, the meeting place of the Swedish parliament in the 1660s, where you can also find 18th century craft shops.

A day in the Archipelago of Göteborg

This day starts with a bus transfer from Göteborg to Hjuvik where accompanying persons will board a boat for a trip to Marstrand Island. Lunch will be served on board, followed by a guided tour of Marstrand Island and Carlsten’s Fortress. Marstrand is situated on the outskirts of the archipelago of the Swedish West Coast, about 35 km north-west of Göteborg. As early as the 13th century the town teemed with busy merchants, and the harbour was full of boats and ships. Now Marstrand is mainly known for sailing. King Carl X Gustaf ordered the construction of Carlsten’s Fortress in 1658. It took 202 years to complete and was considered one of Europe’s strongest maritime defences. Transfer back to Göteborg by bus.
